Barrier Reef Aquariums Kalkwasser is a food grade calcium hydroxide that is used to prepare limewater solutions that will maintain calcium concentrations at natural seawater levels. Kalkwasser solutions maintain calcium levels directly and alkalinity levels indirectly. Other benefits of Kalkwasser use include pH elevation and phosphate precipitation. However, its capacity to perform these functions is dependent on evaporation rate and CO2 concentrations.
