The Black Spotted Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris) is somewhat reef safe. Use caution. They are known to eat tubeworms (feather dusters) and may occasionally nip corals. They have fascinating personalities and will provide endless entertainment. Females remain black with white spots. Males have blue and yellow woven into their pattern, but are very hard to find in the trade since collection in Hawaii ceased. These fish are peaceful to most fish. Do not keep two of them together, unless they are paired. This fish requires a 72" 180+ gallon aquarium, when full grown. It is omnivorous and should be fed a mix of meaty and vegetable based foods like mysis shrimp, spirulina, herbivore frozen foods, algae sheets, and other popular mixes like Rods or LRS. Boxfish are timid eaters and you should avoid housing them with aggressive feeders like Triggers, Puffers, or large Wrasses. Max size is roughly 10". Shipping size varies from 2” - 2.5”.

WARNING - Similar to other Boxfish, it's skin is poisonous. When it dies, or is stressed, it can release a toxin, from it's mucous glands, that is potentially lethal to other tank members, including other Boxfish. Barrier Reef is not liable for any losses due to toxin release.
