The Cubicus Boxfish (Ostracion cubicum) is somewhat reef safe. Use caution. They are known to eat tubeworms (feather dusters) and may occasionally nip corals. They have fascinating personalities and will provide endless entertainment. Juveniles are more yellow with black spots. As the Cubicus Boxfish grows, the yellow will turn more of a grey and brown tone. These fish are peaceful to most fish. Do not keep two of them together, unless they are paired. This fish requires a 250+ gallon aquarium, when full grown. It is omnivorous and should be fed a mix of meaty and vegetable based foods like mysis shrimp, spirulina, herbivore frozen foods, algae sheets, and other popular mixes like Rods or LRS. Boxfish are timid eaters and you should avoid housing them with aggressive feeders like Triggers, Puffers, or large Wrasses. Max size is roughly 20". Shipping size varies from 1” - 2.5”.
WARNING - Similar to other Boxfish, it's skin is poisonous. When it dies, or is stressed, it can release a toxin, from it's mucous glands, that is potentially lethal to other tank members, including other Boxfish. Barrier Reef is not liable for any losses due to toxin release.
